AIESEC SFU: Business Analytics Hackathon

Main Problem to be solved:
“How can we strategically increase the number of SFU students participating in AIESEC’s international exchanges?”

Key Problem Identified:

  • High interest but low signup rate

Now the question arises—why???

Insights from the data:

  • Very low acceptance rate (for every 200 people applying, only 20 are being accepted)

  • Low interest from faculties with high acceptance rates

  • Motivation factors for faculties with high acceptance rates were Career and Culture

  • Higher signup leads to higher acceptance rate

  • Low levels of English proficiency, lower GPA, and no co-op participation are significant factors affecting the acceptance rate

What do these insights mean, and what can we do?

  • Acceptance rate is very low (Why?)

    Insights from the data:

    • Data suggests that it is directly correlated with the signup rate, and since the signup rate is low, so is the acceptance rate

    • Low interest from faculties with high acceptance (suggests: program not effectively marketed to intended users)

Takeaway: Increase sign-ups through effective marketing and focus on faculties that already have higher acceptance rates. Use the factors of motivation identified for targeted marketing.

  • Insights from analyzing their signup process:

    • Very confusing interface and application process

    • Very hard to understand what kind of exchange opportunities they are offering

Takeaway: Improve the interface of the website, with clear steps for the signup process and what to expect; address safety concerns, etc. A lot of work needs to be done on their website in terms of organizing the information.
